Affirmations: Yea or Nay

All those affirmations: I am enough, my life is filled with an abundance of good;

I love myself for who I am, I have… etc. They sound great – in theory. If only I could…

I think affirmations are great if approached properly. If not, they could cause more harm than good. I’m sure there are people, maybe quite a few, who would argue with me, and that’s ok. What I write about are my own experiences and, of course, they will differ from other people’s perspectives.

The thing is, it’s the feeling when saying the words that’s important. Feelings, emotions are our guidance system.

Notice how you feel when you make statements about anything. You don’t want to drive yourself mad trying to analyze every thought you think or word you say throughout the day. Just notice when you notice something. Instead of brushing it off or pushing it back, just make note of it. Jot it down to look at later when you have some time to yourself (and yes, you do need to make some time for yourself – no excuses. If you can’t seem to do that – call me.)

For me, when I say something like, “I am enthusiastic about cleaning my house,” a little voice inside speaks up, so small I might miss it, that says, “No I’m not.” And that’s the one that comes from my sub-conscious, or conditioned, habitual beliefs, and it doesn’t give in easily. The message doesn’t just come in that small voice, there are other thoughts and feelings along with it, just in case I miss the small voice. I might suddenly feel tired, or think of something else I need to do, like go for a walk, work in the garden, or watch TV, or grab a snack. Some of the distractions are healthy, but the house still doesn’t get cleaned.

There are a myriad of reasons why I might not be enthusiastic about cleaning my house and a myriad of reasons why there might be resistance to the affirmations we recite.

The important thing to remember is we are human. We humans have programming instilled at a young age. The good news is that the programming, the thoughts, beliefs, habits can be changed if they are not serving well. Yes, it takes some dedication and will sometimes be quite uncomfortable, but you have to ask yourself – and only yourself – is it worth it? Where will I be if I don’t make even some small changes?

If you want to see what that might look like to start, I’d love to share what I’ve learned with you. If I can do it, so can you!
